(May 4, 2021) Beverly Hills, CA – In an effort to reduce the City’s plastic waste and work toward a more sustainable future, the Beverly Hills Public Works Commission has requested City Staff present an Ordinance for consideration later this summer to the Beverly Hills City Council that aims to reduce single-use plastic cutlery such as to-go cutlery (forks, spoons, knives, etc.) at food service establishments.  

If passed, the Ordinance would require plastic cutlery to only be distributed upon customer request – a change that would help decrease environmental pollution as well as carbon emissions from manufacturing and disposal of plastic cutlery.

“This Ordinance makes it simple for the community to eliminate one stream of single-use plastics – disposable cutlery, without much effort,” said Director of Public Works, Shana Epstein.

Throughout the next several weeks, the City will host a series of informational public meetings regarding the proposed Ordinance. Business owners as well as residents are encouraged to attend.

The Public Works Commission is an advisory body and the Ordinance would ultimately need approval from the Beverly Hills City Council.
